The Vir\u00e9-Cless\u00e9 appellation, situated between Tournus and M\u00e2con, is the most recent of the M\u00e2connais municipal appellations (1997). The wine is produced exclusively from the Chardonnay grape variety.\nThe vines grow mostly on hilly ground where the limestone soil with white stones, typical of the M\u00e2connais, is referred to as \u201ccray\u201d.<\/h2>\n

Overlooking Vir\u00e9, the Belv\u00e9d\u00e8re road that takes you from the village to Burgy provides a stunning view across the vineyard and the Sa\u00f4ne valley to the Jura mountains, the Alps and Mont Blanc in the distance. La Bresse lies opposite. La Croix Sainte Barbe, Vir\u00e9\u2019s highest point (441 m), is located at the intersection of the municipalities of Vir\u00e9, Burgy and P\u00e9ronne.<\/h2>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

Climate<\/h3>\n

Oceanic climate, tending towards southern. \nSummers are warm with lots of sunshine. Rainfall is spread evenly throughout the year. \nThe high ground of Charollais and the secondary mountain ranges of the M\u00e2connais to the west partially protect the geographical area from\nwet oceanic weather.<\/span><\/p>\n

Geology<\/h3>\n

The Vir\u00e9-Cless\u00e9 cru extends over two north-south oriented slopes, delimited by the Bourbonne and\nMouge valleys. They are composed of limestone and marl-limestone strata from the Oxfordian (Jurassic). Other areas at the foot of the slopes are made up of clay and \u201cchailles\u201d (sandstone); they have an easterly exposure and are well-drained. \u201cCray\u201d, a type of M\u00e2connais limestone\nsoil with white stones, is found here. It is absolutely perfect for growing Chardonnay grapes.<\/span><\/p>\n

The vineyard lies on the east-facing slope of\none of the eastern-most secondary ranges of the M\u00e2connais mountains, looking out over the plain of the Sa\u00f4ne, towards La Bresse.<\/span><\/p>\n

Soil types<\/h3>\n

The soils of these geological formations are clay-limestone, covered with limestone scree or silt on the sloping areas. Well-drained, they vary in depth and present unique characteristics depending on the exact locality. The various soil types and numerous, diverse exposures provide different wines from one terroir to the next, hence the concept of \u201cclimate\u201d, which distinguishes each wine.<\/p>\n
